A Tour of Lightning Ridge

Today, we went on a tour of Lightning Ridge, which was really cool. The tour guide seemed to know everything there is to know about Lightning Ridge. After getting a quick rundown of the town, we stopped at a few places. One of them was Lunatic Hill. Before people started mining for opal at lunatic Hill, the deepest anyone mined was around five metres. When people, started mining at Lunatic Hill, they were called lunatics, because they were digging 15 metres deep, but 'the lunatics' found heaps of opals, and other miners quickly started to mine there with them. We kept driving, and stopped at Amigo's castle. He found lots of rocks, so he decided to make a castle out of them. It took him 40 years!  Then, we stopped at a jeweller, which we had morning tea at. Next, it was a bottle house. A man came to Lightning Ridge from Germany, and had so many bottles, that he made a house out of them. We went to the walk in mine next. Because we had already been to Coober Pedy, we didn't learn  much, but it was still pretty cool.

After the tour, we had a look around town, before going to the pool. There is an olympic level diving centre, which is one of only three in Australia. When the lightning ridge locals requested a swimming pool, Walgett Council said no, so they decided to raise the money themselves, and managed to succeed. We had lots of fun just jumping in and swimming around. Then, we went back to the caravan park, before going to the bowling club to have dinner, which was actually a good feed.

I didn't post any photos today, because tommorow I will be posting a video about Lighrning Ridge!
